Welcome to the first books from the past, present, future vol. 01!
Something I’ve noticed, given that I do a lot of reading, is that I have been so focused on reading frontlist books (via ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies—definitely a perk of being an author!)) that are coming out in the future, as well as books that are recently published. That’s how these books are defined: frontlist books have recently been published or are about to be published.
But something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is the backlist. By definition, backlist books are still in print but have been on the market for at least a year. This is probably on my mind because at the end of this month, my second book becomes a backlist book when my third book releases. I love it when readers discover my backlist, especially when a lot of times it feels like there’s a big focus on what’s new and what’s next.
With so many books publishing every week, month, year, it can be hard to keep up. If I’m always focused on what’s out now, or what’s new, the books that are no longer “novelty” move lower and lower on the TBR. I want to give love to all the books, though. Not just the new ones (or the ones not even out yet). That’s ultimately what inspired this series: my love of books from a variety of genres published throughout the years.
So! In this series, I’ll be doing just that and focusing on all three: books from the backlist, what’s out now, and what’s coming soon.
The past. The present. The future. 😉
My definitions, however, are a little different:
🔙 Backlist: Books that have been out for over 3 years
📖 What’s out now: Recently published books, or ones that have been out for less than 3 years
🔮 What’s coming soon: Books that aren’t published yet
I’m kicking things off with craft books because I’ve recently read a few that I’ve found to be especially useful and inspiring. All of these books have given me much to think about in my drafting and editing stages, but also in my overall approach to how I make art and live a creative life.
